Battle No. 001
We keep asking why our children are becoming more violent.
We blame the music.
We blame the internet.
We blame the schools.
We blame the parents.
And while all of those things may play a part...
What if we've been missing one of the biggest warning signs?
Reading.
Not because reading simply helps children pass a test.
Because reading helps prepare them for life.
Research has consistently found that people with low literacy skills face greater challenges in school, employment, and the criminal justice system. The pattern is too consistent to ignore.
That's not just an education problem.
That's not just a family problem.
That's our problem.
Thousands of years ago, the Bible warned us about the danger of living without knowledge.
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." — Hosea 4:6
Knowledge changes people.
Reading is one of the greatest ways we gain it.
When children struggle to read, they often struggle with much more than books.
They struggle to understand.
They struggle to communicate.
They struggle to imagine a future that's different from the one they see every day.
The more words a child has...
The more ways they have to solve a problem.
When children run out of words...
Too often, anger takes their place.
When anger goes unchecked...
The consequences can last a lifetime.
No child is born wanting to hurt someone.
Without knowledge...
Bad choices become easier to make.
Without hope...
The future begins to feel out of reach.
This isn't about blaming children.
It's not about blaming parents either.
Many adults struggle with reading too.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, millions of American adults have low literacy skills.
That means many parents are trying to help their children overcome a battle they were never given the chance to win themselves.
The good news is that this story doesn't have to end there.
Reading can be learned.
Minds can grow.
Futures can change.
If we want our children to become readers...
They need to see us reading too.
Children don't just learn from what we tell them.
They often learn even more from what they see us do.
If books never get opened at home...
Don't be surprised when they stay closed at school.
If we want our children to value knowledge...
They need to see us value it first.
That's why we created 5DollarBookStore.com
Not simply to sell books.
But to help adults become lifelong learners again.
To offer books that strengthen faith.
Build character.
Challenge the way we think.
And remind us that learning doesn't end when school does.
Because when adults read...
Families grow.
When families grow...
Communities grow.
And when communities grow...
The next generation grows with them.
The future our children inherit begins with the example we set today.
Doing nothing isn't an option.
